A vacancy has arisen for a GIS specialist with software development expertise to work within PHE’s Emergency Response Department (ERD) at Porton Down near Salisbury. This post provides an excellent opportunity to work as part of a small, integrated multidisciplinary team in a focused and friendly environment, with collaborators both within and outside of ERD and PHE. You will utilise, develop and maintain innovative GI systems to meet the emergency response requirements of ERD and the requirements of the wider organisation. Working within MRA & BST you will have a particular focus on the study of, preparedness for and response to high impact emerging infectious disease threats and bioterrorism.
You will be educated to at least first degree level in GIS, Geography, Computer Science or a scientific subject with a significant GIS component. You will have extensive experience of GIS software (including, but not exclusively ESRI products) and of their application within Government, research or commercial organisations. You will have a wide range of skills covering the development of web-based GIS applications, the application of desktop GIS software for research and the management of spatial data resources in relational databases. You will be required to proactively manage specific components of GIS-based projects covering both the research and operational functions of the GIS-team. Good communication skills are a must, as well as enthusiasm to learn new skills and a proven record of delivering complex projects on time.
Please note that this post is subject to obtaining a UK Government National Security Vetting Clearance at SC Level. This requires applicants to have been continuously resident in the UK for the last 5 years.
