A chance to view unique historical items from our archive and rare book collections relating to pioneers of tropical medicine, including:
Sir Ronald Ross’s microscope and malarial blood slides c.1900
Sir Patrick Manson’s travel diary from 1865 and original mosquito box
Major H.S. Leeson’s expedition preparations to East Africa 1935-1936
Rare books from the era of exploration
Friday 22 November | 6pm |Manson Theatre - Film: ‘Roads to Africa’ (approx. 50 mins.)
This fascinating film, made in 1936, documents an expedition to East Africa led by Major Leeson to investigate the bionomics of Anopheles funestus, a malaria-carrying mosquito. Leeson and assistant David Gillett leave Croydon Airport for a ten month expedition to study mosquitoes in Uganda, Tanganyika and Kenya. As well as showing details of the expedition, the film gives an insight into the lives of the people they meet in Africa and shows the spectacular scenery and wildlife.The voiceover was added to the film by Gillett shortly before his death in 1995.
