Abstract
Horizon 2020 is the new EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The first call for proposals is currently foreseen for mid December 2013. Running from 2014 to 2020 with a budget of just over €70 billion, Horizon 2020 addresses, among others, a series of grand societal challenges - Smart, green and integrated transport being one of them. Horizon 2020 represents a significant change from previous framework programmes. The programme will be implemented through a new, challenge-driven approach, which will bring together resources and knowledge across different fields, technologies and disciplines.
Besides an overview of the structure, implementation instruments and funding rules of Horizon 2020, the presentation will focus on the rationale and objectives of the transport societal challenge. The broad lines of the first work programme for transport will be outlined. This will cover activities from basic and applied research to market uptake with a new focus on innovation-related activities, such as piloting, test-beds, and support for public procurement of innovative solutions.
