Ethnic density studies usually look at the association between increased ethnic density and health among ethnic minority groups, not the general population per se, so I am not sure whether the general population in countries with fewer foreign national will have better mental health. The literature actually shows the opposite – higher ethnic density is associated with better mental health (after adjusting for area deprivation). A recent study has shown that higher Hispanic ethnic density is beneficial for non-Hispanics (http://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/abs/10.2105/AJPH.2012.300985)
Below are two reviews that summarise the literature and provide discussions on the mechanisms behind ethnic density.

So does this mean that a nation that has relatively very few foreign nationals as a ratio of their overall population will evidence better mental health amongst the majority population compared to other majority populations in other countries?

Precisely! At the moment as I understand it researchers have discovered
an (inverse) association between 'ethnic density' and incidence of
psychotic illness. What concerns me is how effectively various known
risk factors have been corrected for in the analysis (or whether it is
even possible to do this in any meaningful way quantitatively) to be
able to say more confidently that ethnic density is or represents an
additional something or is another way of measuring known risks. I think
researchers acknowledge they do not know what is going on but I would
like to see more work on what 'ethnic density' might represent - quite
possibly exactly some of the things you mention, rather than more about
the geography per se. Not an easy area to investigate.
I do need to say that I have collaborated with a couple of the
researchers doing this work (albeit indirectly rather than on these
specific projects). They are aware of my critique and we are looking at
ways to angle future research questions towards some of the sociological
aspects of what might be going on.
best wishes
Sarah
