Hello

Our staffing levels have a proposed 50% reduction next year, so we're having to take a very good look at our 'activity portfolio'.

We'll have seven frontliners serving 10,000 students, plus effectively 0.5 of a library coordinator at each of the five sites (one of whom will definitely be a librarian, or librarian-in-waiting).

Hi

I have found that the most effective method for designing staffing structures that create the appropriate level of support is to start with your portfolio of activities. If you wish to offer total support for independent learning then you need the right staff skills as well as the right number of staff. The number ratio is a management tool but the activity register is what drives the need for more staff. One recent design for a new staffing structure across three sites offered 1 FT FE librarian, 1 PT HE librarian, 3 Site Coordinators to manage the 3 Learning Centres, 1 Learning Technology Manager and 3 Learning Technologists (1 per site) plus 4 FT Centre Assistants across 3 sites. The College is in JISC Band E.

The Learning Services portfolio offered to staff and students includes Assignment Success workshops across all levels and subjects, Moodle training, Reading List management, portfolio building, digital literacy and copyright workshops and drop in clinics.

Kind regards

Hi Everyone

I'm in the process of putting forward a proposal for more Library staff but would like to know what is the acceptable ratio of staff to students within FE Libraries. I've looked at the recommendations of the Self-Assessment Toolkit for Learning Resource Services in Further Education Colleges in England which mentions at least1 FTE professional staff : at least 5000 students and a ratio: 1 front line staff-member : at least 1000 students. I'd like to get an indication from the list members about their staffing levels within libraries.

All comments would be greatly appreciated

Regards
