Dewey for art documentation: ARLIS workshop

Tuesday 17th December, 9.30-5.00, London Metropolitan University (Holloway Road campus)

Classifying art documentation is full of challenges, and negotiating the Dewey Decimal Classification system can sometimes feel very much like an art! This one-day workshop, organised by the ARLIS Cataloguing and Classification Committee, takes a long, hard look at the art schedules of Dewey and provides plenty of opportunities for delegates to hone their Dewey skills.

The workshop covers a general introduction to classification, an introduction to the Dewey scheme, followed by a more detailed look at how to use the art schedules and the particular issues of classifying some areas of art, such as photography and video art. There will also be an introduction to WebDewey, with time for delegates to use it themselves. The focus of the day is learning-by-doing, so as well as presentations by experts and practitioners, there will be lots of practical activities to provide hands-on experience of the Dewey scheme.

As well as input from cataloguers who specialise in classifying art materials, we are pleased that Caroline Kent (British Library, and chair of the Dewey Decimal Classification Editorial Policy Committee) will be joining us to share her expertise. In addition, there will be opportunities to network with other cataloguing and classification colleagues throughout the day.
