Theatre and Narrative in Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Italian Literature
This panel aims to investigate the impact that the language of Italian and International theatre had on Nineteenth- and Twentieth-century Italian narrative. Thus, drama is under scrutiny as a model of oral expression and plurilingual mimesis and also as a repertoire of topics and performing techniques which enables Italian narrative to escape from the classicistic rhetoric of the Risorgimento’s epic, the Verismo and, further on, the Neo-realism.
From the theatricality of the Scapigliatura to the hybridization of genres in Pirandello’s narrative, from Vittorini’s “Guernica novel” – skilfully combining theatrical models with the dialogic techniques of North-American novels – to the narrative experiments of writers such as Moravia, Palazzeschi, Bontempelli, Calvino, Gadda, Pasolini, Sciascia or the writers of Gruppo 63, Nineteenth- and Twentieth-century Italian narrative uses the theatre as quotation, transfiguration, reference and inspiration. Italian prose writers who make a conscious attempt to pursue this “dramatization of epos” – if we want to adopt and reverse Szondi’s famous paradigm on the epicization of modern drama – are variously indebted to the dramatic theory and work of playwrights such as Shakespeare, Pirandello, Wilder, Brecht and Beckett (and many more).
Topics to discuss include but are not limited to the following:
1 – The drama as a necessary model to reproduce Italian spoken language in the expressionist experiments of the plurilingual writers “à la Contini”, from the Scapigliati to Gadda and beyond.
2- Theatrical borrowings and “dramatization of epos” in the narrative of individual authors (Pirandello, Vittorini, Moravia, Palazzeschi, Bontempelli, Calvino, Gadda, Pasolini, etc.).
3 – The «dialogism» of Nineteenth- and Twentieth-century Italian narrative as an element of theatricality.
4 – Performativity and gender performativity for the construction of the authorial image in Nineteenth- and Twentieth-century Italian narrative: from Auctor to Actor.
5 – The Gramscian model of national-popular literature and the dramatic tradition as the cornerstone of Italian popular narrative.
6 – The «Brecht effect» and the «Beckett effect» in Italian Twentieth-century narrative.
Colleagues interested in this panel may send a short abstract in Italian or English (250-300 words) and a brief bio to Dr. Enrica Maria Ferrara [log in to unmask] by the 5 December 2013.
Thank you very much.
Best wishes,
Enrica
