I wonder if you have two separate issues here. The donations should not
be an issue for a distinctive fund. The income generation from the use of
your collections might be different. The problem with MIFs (Miscellaneous
Income Funds) is that, however well-meaning an initial attempt is to
protect them, there may well occur a financial situation when all MIFs are
appropriated. You also have to be very vigilant to protect MIFs from
predation or oversight by your parent department/service.

Dear all
Does anyone have experience of managing a 'fund' for their
Collection/repository - i.e. a ring fenced, protected pot of money that
sits separately from institutional budgets and carries over year-year? We
are looking to set up something that could facilitate donations from
depositors and interested parties, or even for any potential commercial
revenue that we generate from the collections that we own.
I would be happy to hear about practicalities, and particularly how to
'sell' this to Finance department...
I would be happy to hear from anyone with experience in this area, but
particularly within HE archives.
With thanks
Sarah
