MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics (MRC CNGG) 4-year PhD
The MRC CNGG brings together world-leading researchers from within the Institute of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences (IPMCN) and from across Cardiff University. Our work includes discovery and translational research – grounded on genetics and genomics – to understand the major causes of mental illness and neurodegenerative disorders.
The MRC CNGG has 4-year PhD opportunities available from October 2014. Applications are accepted from individuals with a variety of backgrounds. However, we are particularly keen to attract applicants interested in pursuing a bioinformatics and/or biostatistics centered PhD and have reserved a number of studentships specifically for this purpose.
The PhD scheme follows a 1+3 year structure, with the students following the MSc in Bioinformatics/Genetics epidemiology and Biostatistics course in their first year. This is an established and successful MSc, run by the School of Medicine at Cardiff University, details of which can be found here:

During the first year there will also be brief placements with clinicians observing clinics in the areas of neurodegeneration, psychosis & child development in order to place the genetic and bioinformatics research within context and understand how data are obtained.
Following the first year, students are able to choose the laboratory and topic of their subsequent three year PhD research in discussion with potential supervisors in the MRC CNGG. For example, recent Bioinformatics & Biostatistics PhD projects titles include:
• Identification of function components associated with disease risk
• Inferring disease biology from genome-wide data
• Functional pathways underlying cognitive phenotypes in schizophrenia
• Exploring the Genetic Overlap of Early Neurodevelopmental Problems, With a Focus on ADHD and ASD
Application process: Applicants should have a first class degree in a relevant subject area such as genetics, mathematics or computer sciences. Please send a CV, including the names of two referees, and a covering letter outlining why you want to undertake a 4-year PhD within the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics to [log in to unmask] by 24th January 2014.
The MRC provides a stipend and PhD registration fees at UK/EU student rate, research expenses and a contribution towards travel. The MRC does not pay fees at the overseas rate; please check you eligibility on the MRC website.
Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Anthony Isles ([log in to unmask]). For full details of supervisors and their areas of research please go to:
