Using genetics to stratify treatment in rheumatoid arthritis
A PhD project in statistical genetics is available in the School of Medicine at the University of Leeds for October 2014 entry. A number of fully-funded Medical Research Council (MRC) studentships are available at the University and these will be awarded competitively to the best candidates across a number of possible projects.
The project will be supervised by Professors Jenny Barrett and Ann Morgan.
Treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and many other common diseases is not tailored to the characteristics of the patient. For many RA patients the first-line therapy fails, and preventable disease progression occurs. There is therefore a compelling need to identify predictors of response before treatment starts. Large observational patient cohorts with extensive genetic and clinical information are now being assembled to address this, particularly as part of the newly formed MRC and Arthritis Research UK-funded MATURA (Maximising Therapeutic Utility in Rheumatoid Arthritis) consortium. This project’s aim is to develop and test out statistical approaches to maximize the use of the information from different sources to identify predictors of response, using as a paradigm response to methotrexate in RA patients.
Further details of the studentship conditions, including how to apply, can be found at (http://www.findaphd.com/search/PhDDetails.aspx?CAID=860&LID=757). Some further project details can be accessed under the Genetics and Disease area link (http://medhealth.leeds.ac.uk/info/1450/scholarships/1239/mrc-dtg_studentships/4). Informal enquiries can be made to Jenny Barrett ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]><mailto:[log in to unmask]>).
The project would suit a graduate in a mathematical or statistical subject or a graduate in a biological subject with a strong background in mathematics/statistics. No prior knowledge of genetics is required.
The closing date for applications is 6th January 2014.
