Just to add to the list of historical art world events that recognised internet based art practices:

The Berlin Videofest (what was to become Transmediale), included in its 1995 programme a curated section on digital art, with an exhibition of works on both CDROM and the web (and did so thereafter, each year). There had been earlier exhibitions that included web and internet based art (as we have seen mentioned on this list) but I think this might be one of the earlier examples of an established festival (in this case, film and video) presenting a curated programme dedicated to such work (EMAF, ISEA and Ars, as well as other events, were including this kind of work, of course, but perhaps not in the same way). There was also a prize awarded (to Gerald van der Kaap for BlindROM).

The Berlin public responded to the event with vigour. People were queuing around the block to get into the event, which was a novelty for a festival dedicated to experimental art practice. They were there to see the web based projects, intrigued by how such projects offered a vision of a hyper-connected world (which we now take for granted). The local media had run the story on the evening news. That it was only a few years after the fall of the Berlin Wall was probably not incidental to the interest.

It doesn't seem very long ago really...

I wonder if there is a comprehensive international list of such events?

best

Simon

Hello All,

re mail art:
György Galántai In 1978 he posted a call ?Please
send me information about your activity? to the
international Mail Art Network. With the received mail
he founded the Artpool archive that ? besides its focus
on the new and alternative mediums in contemporary arts
from the 1960s on ? became the most important centre
for documentation and research on Mail Art in Middeleastern Europe.

introduced the World Wide Web
"which was just gaining attention in the explosive hype of the Internet. There were no commercial Internet providers in Hungary, and just three Hungarian CD-ROMs. The lack of a working Internet connection during the event led to a heated debate between representatives of the Hungarian Telecom and East Edge- a group of Hungarian students well acquainted with the Internet."

re Syndicate (1996)
Together with 30 other people (I still have the hand written
participation list) we sat around a long table at DEAF 96
- to discuss various issues including communication
in East Europe - resulting in the Syndicate mail list
hosted by Andreas Broeckmann and Inke Arns.
