Subject: vacancy in Amsterdam

The University of Amsterdam, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, offers a

Special Chair ‘Quality of Life, in particular of Deaf People’

For 7.6 hours per week (0.2 fte).

The chair-holder is expected to build a bridge between two distinctive areas of social science

research: between study of quality of life and disability studies on the one hand, and of the lives

and culture of deaf people on the other. The research of the chair-holder will be integrated into

the ‘Academy of Long-Term Care’, currently being established under the aegis of the Research

Priority Area Global Health. Although the focus of current work is largely on arrangements and

practices in the Netherlands, the intention is to develop comparative studies elsewhere. It is now

envisaged that the work of the Special Professor be the basis of a new line of investigation

focused on deaf people. The chair will also be involved in the master and PhD programs offered

by the Graduate School of Social Sciences, and is expected to interface with practitioners in the

field.

Tasks

Strengthening the broad research and teaching profile of sociology and anthropology in

Amsterdam

Actively contributing to the exchange of knowledge and insights with people outside the

academic community, notably with practitioners.

Developing, carrying out and supervising empirical social-scientific research on the quality of

life in general and the lives and culture of deaf people in particular at a high academic level,

and further developing international leadership in this field, developing a research line in

collaboration with junior staff members and other researchers working at the Amsterdam

Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) and its program groups.

Promoting top-level research, 'fostering research collaboration (also with post-docs and PhD

candidates) and developing internationally competitive academic leadership

Acquiring and helping to acquire external funding for research (also on behalf of junior

researchers)

Actively contributing to the organization of research and teaching and to the development of

the discipline in national and international contexts by publishing and participating in national

and international research networks and educational initiatives

Teaching specialist courses in the BA, MA and PhD programs of our department, and cosupervising

graduate students

Profile

PhD degree in one of the social sciences

Commitment to the research agenda of the AISSR in and the sociology and anthropology of

health in particular, and to enhance collaborations in relevant fields

Commitment to engage in collaboration with stakeholders in the field and to engage in

discussions with the public at large

Strong general knowledge of the social‐scientific study of the quality of life in general and the

lives and culture of deaf people in particular

Outstanding track record in empirical research on the quality of life and deaf people, as

exemplified in a strong publication record in internationally peer reviewed journals and/or

books published by internationally recognized press

Demonstrated ability to acquire research funding from external sources

Thorough mastery of quantitative and/or qualitative research methods

A proven record of high‐quality teaching at the academic level.

Adequate knowledge of Dutch in order to allow for immediate participation in the

Department (i.e. at least the ability to read and understand the Dutch language).

The ability to express oneself through sign language is recommended.

Salary

The appointment (7.6 hrs / week) will be on a temporary basis for a period of five years.

Depending on qualifications and experience, the salary will be in conformity with the Collective

Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities. The special chair will be formally appointed by the

Stichting Handgebaar, while the actual work will take place within the University of Amsterdam.

Applications

Applications by email only. These should include:

i) a concise statement of motivation (2 pages max.),

deadline for applications is November 15, 2013.

Job interviews are scheduled on December 17, 2013.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is one of the Departments in the FMG.

Research and education are carried out by special institutes. The College of Social Sciences (CSS)

and the Graduate School for the Social Sciences (GSSS) are responsible for the undergraduate

and graduate teaching programs in the social sciences. Research takes place under the aegis of the

Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR), a multidisciplinary research institute,

the biggest one of its kind in the Netherlands. The broad scope and pluralism of our education

and research programs are inspired by and reflect a strong degree of internationalization. The

Program groups ‘Health, Care and the Body’ and ‘Dynamics of Culture and Citizenship’ and

form two main cohorts of researchers involved in the anthropology resp. sociology of health.

Academics from these program groups alongside researchers from other disciplines collaborate in

various interdisciplinary centers, including the Centre for Global Health and Social Sciences that

represents the UvA’s research priorities.

De Gelderhorst is the national center for elderly deaf people and provides housing, care, and

other services in nine different cities. The Stichting Handgebaar supports projects that aim at

strengthening the well-being of deaf people in areas where deaf people are discriminated against

because of their handicap. The projects involve deaf consciousness and friendliness, education,

culture and expertise.
