Research and education are carried out by special institutes. The College of Social Sciences (CSS)
and the Graduate School for the Social Sciences (GSSS) are responsible for the undergraduate
and graduate teaching programs in the social sciences. Research takes place under the aegis of the
Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR), a multidisciplinary research institute,
the biggest one of its kind in the Netherlands. The broad scope and pluralism of our education
and research programs are inspired by and reflect a strong degree of internationalization. The
Program groups ‘Health, Care and the Body’ and ‘Dynamics of Culture and Citizenship’ and
form two main cohorts of researchers involved in the anthropology resp. sociology of health.
Academics from these program groups alongside researchers from other disciplines collaborate in
various interdisciplinary centers, including the Centre for Global Health and Social Sciences that
represents the UvA’s research priorities.
De Gelderhorst is the national center for elderly deaf people and provides housing, care, and
other services in nine different cities. The Stichting Handgebaar supports projects that aim at
strengthening the well-being of deaf people in areas where deaf people are discriminated against
because of their handicap. The projects involve deaf consciousness and friendliness, education,
culture and expertise.
