CPD (Colonial/Postcolonial/Decolonial working group) panel proposal
“Biopolitics and the Postcolonial”
This panel re-examines Foucault’s articulation of biopolitics in the context of colonialism, and seeks papers that open up (post-)colonial ways of thinking about political rationalities. Earlier postcolonial scholars noted a series of relationship between colonial governance and subsequent governmental technologies in (European) modern societies: for example, through sexuality (Stoler 1995) and surveillance (Mitchell 1991). This session in particular seeks to develop postcolonial approaches to contemporary understanding of three inextricable political rationalities: security, territory and population. How can we think of security against terrorism through the postcolonial lens? Are the development and articulation of territoriality reminiscent of colonialism? Can we have the notion of populations without the colonial inscription of race?
We invite papers that develop genealogical approaches to contemporary logics of biopolitical governance, including but not limited to European colonialism. Possible paper topics include: colonial sciences and knowledge; subjugation and population management; the development of colonial territory and imperial bordering; global capitalism and colonialism; (post-)colonialism and citizenship; race and racism in world politics; and articulation of civilisation and barbarousness.
If you are interested in participating, please submit an abstract of no more than 200 words to Hidefumi Nishiyama ([log in to unmask]) by 14th November 2013.
