We use WordPress pretty extensively for Edge Hill's external website and it has powered academic websites for over two years and now also hosts most support sites and an increasing number of "systems" like news, events etc. We're about to launch a new university homepage built using WordPress widgets. In total we have about 70 sites and 250+ users.
So far it's done pretty much everything we could want through a combination of plugins and in-house developed custom themes and plugins.
We did a session at IWMW about some of our developments - slides here - http://www.slideshare.net/mikenolan/word-press-beyond-blogging-final and have written a few blog posts too: http://blogs.edgehill.ac.uk/webservices/tag/wordpress/
Happy to answer any further questions people have off list.
Cheers,
Mike Nolan

We also use Squiz Matrix, and I'd agree with everything Nick just said.
Having just run a major upgrade of Matrix (from version 4.2 to 4.16, the scripts for which you have to pay Squiz), we've hit more serious issues post-upgrade than we had before (I could arguably be biased here given our current woes)...
Having played around with Joomla and Wordpress I'd like to hear about any truly open source alternatives.

Hi there,
We use Squiz Matrix. I've heard a lot of Unis use Rhythmyx and I'd be interested to know the pros and cons.
The jury is out on Matrix; it can be quite powerful but it's fairly complex to use and some very basic things seem to require near-developer knowledge. It also requires a lot of dedicated resource to get it working and is not cheap in terms of support and training.
Best wishes,
Nick
