medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
That is, of course, explicitly a devotional work rather than a work of
scholarship. The following is rather more satisfactory, as it does at
least give references to the Sarum Missal and the Gregorian Sacramentary:
Martin R. Dudley, The Collect in Anglican Liturgy: Texts and Sources,
1549-1989 (Alcuin Club Collections, 72) Liturgical Press, 1994.
I can't now remember what the original query was, but it should be
remembered that the English versions of some of the prayers and collects
in the Book of Common Prayer pre-date that work. This is alluded to (but
only in passing) in:
Charles C. Butterworth, The English Primers (1529-1545), University of
Pennsylvania Press, 1953.
