“ . . . the rediscovery of a meaning, the perceiving that the earth is a form of writing, a geography of which we had forgotten that we ourselves are the authors.”
Georges Perec, Species of Spaces (1974)
Georges Perec (1936-1982) has long been celebrated for his playful and experimental approach to writing – most famously in La Disparition (1969), a lipogram written entirely without the letter ‘e’, and translated into English as A Void by Gilbert Adair. A leading member of the Oulipo, a transdisciplinary group whose members included writers and mathematicians, Perec has gained an international status as a leading innovator in the literary arts in post-war Europe. Recent years have seen the publication of new translations of Perec’s novels and essays and the emergence of a renewed critical interest in his work and its legacy. Moreover, Perec’s use of creative constraints has proved an inspiration not only for writers but also for artists working in a range of disciplines. In this context, this conference has two closely related aims. The first is to reflect on the impact of Perec’s work on innovative creative practice within the literary arts and beyond. The second is to explore transdisciplinary research methods and practice within the arts and humanities. This one day international conference will provide a unique opportunity for researchers, writers and artists to engage in creative and critical dialogue across the disciplines. Perec’s 1974 collection Species of Spaces provides the thematic focus for this event - we especially welcome proposals which address the theme of space, whether in Perec’s work or in transdisciplinary practice more broadly. Papers / presentations may also wish to address some of the following questions:
• In what ways and with what effects has Perec’s work inspired or transformed creative practice in literature and the arts?
• In what similar or different ways have arts practitioners responded to his work?
• In what ways can the impact of Perec’s work be contextualised or theorised?
• To what extent does Perec’s work provide critical or creative models for transdisciplinary research and practice?
• What new insights might a transdisciplinary approach offer when considering the legacy of Perec’s work?
Proposals for papers (15 minutes), presentations or poster presentations are invited from researchers and practitioners from a range of disciplines, including (but not limited to): Architecture; Creative Writing; Cultural Geography; Dance; Design; English; Film Studies; Fine Art; Media Studies; Music; Performing Arts.
Proposals (of up to 300 words) should be submitted to [log in to unmask] by Monday 6th January 2014. Practice-based proposals are encouraged and will be considered subject to any specific requirements (please give details in your submission). The conference organisers intend to publish selected work emerging from this conference in an edited collection.
