Hello
We use a mixture of bespoke DA/IA and BKSB. WE only use BKSB when we have already established ss working at L1 / L2
Writing is certainly problematic for ESOL ss and we find that due to the vocabulary and time pressures of the FS exams that often ss need to take a level below their reading level.

Subject: Re: ESOL BKSB assessments
We've been using BKSB for quite a while and it has had mixed reviews here too. We only use the reading element for our initial assessments and we supplement it with a piece of writing and an interview. We often find that people have a higher level in the reading than they do in the writing, and would always tend to base their placement on the writing outcome. Of course, it's no good at all for really low level ESOL learners with limited IT skills.
We are in the process of training our tutors to use the diagnostic assessment. Our lead assessor is very enthusiastic about this tool and all the extra resources it enables tutors and learners to access.

Subject: ESOL BKSB assessments
Dear group members
Are many of you in colleges and other settings using the BKSB ESOL initial and diagnostic assessments? We've started using it for the first time this academic year at Rotherham College and have so far used the reading and writing elements but not the listening (there is no speaking). I would be interested to hear of your experiences/ opinions.
Our management are keen on this method of assessment however many of us practitioners reserve judgment. For example many students are coming out
2 levels lower on their writing compared to their reading initial assessments. This presents a challenge when working out what level to place them in.
In addition we are using the diagnostic results to inform a new student centred ILP we are trialling this year. Are others doing this?
I look forward to your comments.
Warm wishes
Nicola Dean
