Special session for the City Futures III conference on Cities as strategic places and players in a globalized world in Paris, 18-20 June 2014.
A joint conference of The European Urban Research Association (EURA) and the Urban Affairs Association (UAA) will hold their third Joint Conference on City Futures in Paris Special Session see: http://cityfutures2014.org/fr/city-futures
Session title:
Urban Diversity: Challenges and Opportunities
Organisers: Gideon Bolt (Utrecht University), Ronald van Kempen (Utrecht University), Mike Raco (University College London), Tuna Tasan-Kok (TUDelft/UCR)
Deadline submission of abstracts: 31 October 2013
Deadline Paper: 30 April 2014
Cities are becoming more diverse, because of increasing immigration, increasing diversity associated with this migration, different lifestyles within and between groups, spatial segregation in terms of ethnicity and socio-economic variables, leading to a diversity of opportunities for different groups. It is quite common in studies on urban diversity to have a clear focus on its negative consequences, such as intolerance and conflicts between groups. However, urban diversity can, under certain conditions, also contribute to strong positive developments in cities, such as increased social cohesion, enhanced economic performance and competitiveness, and greater social mobility for individuals and groups. Whether diversity has positive or negative effects depends to a large extent on policies and governance arrangements. In the words of the European Commission (2011, p. 34) cities have a key role to play in countering the negative effects and stimulating the positive effects to fully exploit the potential creativity and innovation that may stem from diversity.
This session aims to bring together scholars from different parts of the world who are working on the effects of urban diversity and/or the governance of diversity. Papers may focus on one or more aspects of diversity (e.g., socio-economic, socio-demographic, ethnic and/or cultural diversities, but also diversity in lifestyles, attitudes and activities). The organisers themselves are members of an EU-funded FP7 project on urban diversity (named DIVERCITIES) that includes academics from 14 European universities.
Potential topics and themes of interest might include, but are not limited to:
• Papers that focus on the effect of diversity on social cohesion within neighbourhood and cities
• Studies that examine the positive and negative effects of diversity on social mobility
• Papers that examine under what conditions diversity does encourage and/or suppress local entrepreneurialism within cities
• Studies that focus on the way in which diversity shapes the identities and qualities of life of urban residents
• Studies that look into the role of urban policies in generating social and economic outcomes
• Case studies on the success and fail factors of grassroots initiatives aimed at promoting positive aspects of diversity.
• Papers that link policy discourses on diversity to the discussion on the ‘just city’ (Fainstein, 2010) and ‘just diversity’ (Fincher and Iveson, 2008).
• Papers that look into the role of urban diversity in urban planning and spatial policy.
The coordinators of workshop will take the initiative to organise a special issue for a scientific journal (provided that we receive a sufficient number of papers of good quality). Please send your abstracts to Gideon Bolt ([log in to unmask]) before October 31, 2013.
Kind regards,
Tuna
