 Hi Laura,
Just come across this http://mapthemuseum.org.uk/#14.00/50.8300/-0.1400 in fact when I first saw the name of the link thought it was your project. Don't know if you are aware of it, but does seem to have some connection. Also thought it was nice to share as well.

And yes I'd be interested in being a tester for your project.

Dear All,

I am currently researching handheld museum audio guides to implement one at The Rhondda Heritage Park in South Wales. I was wondering whether anyone knew of a good one they had come across. Ideally I am looking at ones which were developed in-house, as opposed to outsourcing to a private company, and are in a small to medium sized museum. Any which interpret an industrial museum or landscape would be particularly useful.

I'm already working with a local partner for the hardware and software, it is purely the content which I am interested in researching. If anyone themselves have implemented such a guide, please feel free to send me any tips or useful advice.

Please email me on: [log in to unmask]

Thank you

Subject: Re: Museum Adio Guides

Hi Jonathan,

We're in the final stages of our 'Talking Museum' project, and all of the content has been done in-house.

It's a project to create an audio guide and audio descriptions that we can put on our website, for visually impaired visitors (though interesting for non-VI visitors too). A team of U3A volunteers each chose a display (in our small/medium-sized museum) to research and write up, and we asked one of the artists who gives guided tours for visually impaired people at the National Galleries of Scotland to come and give us some training. She also helped me edit the scripts, with a view to making sure they really would be helpful for VI visitors, and I did a quick recording (on my phone!) to put on some MP3 players and test with visually impaired volunteers.

We've just finished editing the 'official' recording, with each writer recording their own bit where possible, with a freelance audio specialist doing the recording and using her own equipment. It's been a long process, and I'm shortly to pass the files over to the people who are supplying the hardware - I'm a bit nervous about the next stage! So far, it's been hugely rewarding, and our triallers got a lot out of even the rough cut.

I dived into this project with just a vague idea, and it's evolved as we've gone along. I wouldn't really recommend that as a method! But do give me a ring or email me if you'd like to discuss any of the aspects of the in-house project and talk over some of the things I learnt along the way. I'm on leave today (just had to check something quickly and couldn't resist replying today), but in the office tomorrow.

Best wishes,
Helen

Subject: Drinking about museums London, Princess Louise, this Thursday!

Dear MCGers,

The US National Gallery of Art's Dana Allen-Greil (@danamuses) and two colleagues (including @johngordy) are in London this week, and they'd love to meet other people interested in museums and technology for some #drinkingaboutmuseums at the Princess Louise pub in Holborn from 6pm on Thursday. No need to RSVP but you could let people know you're coming on twitter (or see
https://twitter.com/search?q=%23drinkingaboutmuseums&src=hash&f=realtime)

Please excuse the London- and social-centric post, and of course anyone who happens to be passing through London (like me) is welcome!

Cheers, Mia

Subject: Art Maps Research Project

Dear all,

I am working on Art Maps, a collaborative research project involving Horizon Digital Economy at the University of Nottingham, Tate (Tate Learning, Tate Online and Tate Research), and the Centre for Intermedia at the University of Exeter.

Art Maps explores the relation between artworks and place, through the development of a crowdsourcing platform with web and mobile interfaces. More information can be found on our blog: http://www.tate.org.uk/about/projects/art-maps, and the origins of the project in this blog post by John Stack, Head of Digital Transformation at Tate: http://www.tate.org.uk/context-comment/blogs/art-maps-mapping-art-collection

The Art Maps platform has not been publicly released yet, as it is still under development. To test the platform, we are now going to carry out an online study which will help us gain insights into the use of it by the digital audience. Therefore, we are looking for participants and I would be grateful if you could circulate the information sheet in attachment. The deadline for registering is on September 18th by emailing me.

Thanks

Best wishes

Laura

Hi Laura

This sounds really interesting and I'd be more than happy to give it a try and provide feedback. Note that the MCG list strips off attachments, so could you send it directly to me?

I recently hacked together a crowdsourcing interface for geotagging and dating Flickr Commons images. It's a very quick and simple first attempt and has deliberately not been widely circulated as yet, but if you did want a look you can find it at http://www.whatsthatpicture.com/flickr/commons/. It has been an interesting experience seeing how the first test users have utilised it.
