Different answer depending on whether you really do want to build from source, or whether you actually just want to install without using RPMs.
If the former, Phil can give you some guidance, drop him an email.
If the latter, there's no real installation necessary, per se. All the RPM does is:
* drop the jar file into /opt/raptor/$COMPONENT, along with lib/* and a few other things.
* perform the key generation process
* drop an initscript on to the system that runs a java command to start the component.
So all you have to do is grab the RPM and unpack it to get the code, and then do those steps manually. Let me know if you have a problem with any of that, and I can help you out.
Re: the versioning - the actual code is in vX.X.X format only. The -X.X on the RPM (e.g. 1.1.4-1.1) is RPM sub versioning - i.e. to allow newer versions of the RPMs for the same software version (e.g. in case of bugs in the RPM, rather than the software itself).
