There is a short story about this on the Museums Association website, where people can add comments if they like. We also have an article about the Gem conference.

Fascinating reading. I'm sorry I wasn't there for the discussions.
As someone who was active in GEM as a regional organiser back in the
80s and 90s, it is interesting to see many of the same questions and
issues being raised as 25 years ago! In some respects it is
depressing that we seem not to have moved on. On the other hand the
paper does highlight what I think is the crucial factor - lack of
esteem and professional respect.
I have long argued that museum education is a distinctive form of
pedagogy and not simply a form of school teaching in a non-school
setting. Having this accredited is crucial, with accepted forms of
recorded CPD, 'training' and even qualification. I am now one of the
judges of the Sandford Heritage Education Awards. It is not the
Sandford's job to provide such accreditation for staff, but I can see
how a process of accreditation or of training could work through
some similar kind of process. I don't think a portfolio on its own
would work without some kind of external moderation or quality
assurance. Issues of cost need to be addressed. If I want accreditation
for my professional skills then I accept I have to pay for it.
Best wishes,
Don

Hi all
As per requests please find attached a summary of the Future of Museum
Learning workshop we held at GEM conference.
A big thank you to everyone who took part in the workshop, and do add
any further comments.
We agreed a meeting during the MA conference in Liverpool 11th-12th
November would be a good opportunity to take the conversation forward
and firm up some actions. If you want to attend please email me. I was
thinking a breakfast or twilight meeting, do let me know your
preferences?
Best wishes
Sam

Dear Gemmers,
I am writing a story for the Museums Association website on the Future
of Museum Learning for Children and Young People Enquiry. I know some
people from GEM were involved and I wondered if anyone had any views on
the report, particularly the Thinkpiece part of it and its conclusions.
I've been away for two weeks and might have missed something on the
email list related to this. Apologies if that is the case.
