1. He doesn't read enough. Some people in all fields adopt a very complex style of writing, but there are plenty of plain speaking archaeologists of the contemporary world
2. For me, at least, that gap is intentional. I feel that the ways (plural) people understand the past can do with being challenged, that many of them underpin a dangerous conservatism.
I'm not looking at the discussion because it annoys me, no one ever discusses whether there's any value in studying the Palaeolithic or the Byzantine or any other period. And his two criticisms could very easily be laid at the door of scholars of any other period.
