Dear colleagues,
Please find in attach the second circular for the international open
PAGES Focus 4 workshop “Towards a more accurate quantification of
human-environment interactions in the past” that will be held in Leuven,
Belgium, from 3-7 February 2014. Since the introduction of agriculture,
humans have profoundly impacted natural environments through land cover
change. However, the extent to which humans have impacted the
environment at regional to global scales prior to the modern era is
still under debate. The aim of this workshop is to provide a forum where
scientists from both environmental sciences and humanities can meet and
share their data and ideas on how to quantify past human-environment
interactions.
We are happy to accept abstract submissions until 20 October 2013.
Topics to be discussed include the quantification of:
(i) human impact on the landscape (including population dynamics, land
use and vegetation change) at various spatial and temporal scales;
(ii) environmental response to human impact (on soils, sediments, lakes,
C cycle and climate);
(iii) threshold levels and feedback mechanisms between human activities
and the environment.
At this stage, 11 international scholars have accepted to give a
key-note lecture on one of the topics of this workshop. A complete list
of invited talks is provided in the 2nd circular.
More information on this workshop can be found on
