If you can bear Robert Scoble's interview style/Google Glass oddness, this video is also worth checking out for a working demo of Estimote and Bluetooth Low Energy in which museums are referenced. It also mentions that you can turn your own phone into a beacon if you download their app (currently iPhone only I think):

As per Mike's points below, this could be huge...
Cheers,

Subject: More on iBeacon and "the end of NFC"
I posted that thing to the list recently about Bluetooth 4.0.
Robert Scoble just wrote this, calling it "the end of NFC".

The company mentioned in his post is here: http://estimote.com/ - more info from them:
> Apple, Google, Nokia have announced native support for the Bluetooth
> Low Energy (BLE) chip The chip can communicate with smartphones from 4
> inches to 30 feet away It's low power so can run for 2 years on a
> single coin battery These particular "motes" also contain temperature
> / motion sensors
Personally I think this could be huge for in-gallery mobile stuff - not necessarily this particular implementation of the tech but the fact that the general concept of low-energy Internet of Things spime-like devices (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spime) sitting in a physical space and delivering content / action seems to be now - finally - coming of age?
cheers
Mike
