‘It’s my content 2.0’
The focus of this iSay event is on the ethical, legal and epistemological frameworks that govern VGC, concerning itself with the practicalities of ‘generating’ visitor content. By exploring issues of IPR, ownership and maintenance of VGC as well as museum ethics pertinent to the integration, archiving and disposal of VGC, we are seeking to explore and address the tensions between museums’ aspiration to embrace VGC on one hand, and their anxieties over maintaining quality and trustworthiness.
This free event at the prestigious Museum Studies department at Leicester University will gather heritage professionals, academics and consultants working in the area of participatory heritage content, who are interested in issues of IPR, ownership and ethics.
The event will include presentations from Naomi Korn (IP Consultant and Chair, Libraries and Archives Copyright Alliance), Mike Ellis (Thirty8 Digital) Dr Janet Marstine (University of Leicester)
We are looking for participants who are interested in/have experience of working with VGC to give five minute provocations or case studies highlighting their own experiences, pitfalls and research in this area.
The remainder of the day will include workshops on the themes of ethics and Intellectual property as they relate to VGC.
Contributions
We welcome proposals of 250 words maximum for short presentations. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
• Is VGC good enough?
• Moderation: ethics, rules and practicalities
• IPR: whose content is it anyway?
• VGC and the sharing of authority
• Curating VGC: a new type of curator?
Doctoral students
We have a limited number of funded places available for PhD students. The funding will contribute towards travel and accommodation expenses up to a maximum of £180. Interested students are encouraged to submit a proposal (250 words maximum) summarising their doctoral research and how it relates with the focus of the event.

Submissions must be emailed to [log in to unmask] and include presenter name(s), affiliation(s) and email address(es), as well as 250-word proposal(s) as detailed above. Doctoral students must indicate if they wish to apply for funding.
Publication
Descriptions of projects and technologies presented at all the events will be included in the iSay blog, which will host discussions before, during and after the events. Presenters will also be invited to contribute chapters for an edited volume that will be published in 2014.

Background
iSay is a two-year network funded by AHRC under the Digital Transformations in the Arts and Humanities theme. Focusing on Visitor-Generated Content (VGC) in heritage institutions, the network will convene four events during which heritage professionals and academics will explore the radically new models of visitor participation that are emerging within heritage practice in the digital mediascape, through sharing practices and discourses on the politics of moderation, control, legitimisation, adoption and use of VGC.
