not sure to understand the 'direction' you want to go .. but the way I
would do is (1) edit spm_spm.m (toward the end) by commenting the lines
where residuals are deleted and (2) use the EasyROI utility
(http://www.sbirc.ed.ac.uk/cyril/Downloads.html) to get the 1st
eigenvalue across voxels in a ROI (from any images you want)

What we plan to do is to take eigenvariate in the residual images with a mask of the region we are interested in. I don't really have a clue on how to do this, but I'm thinking maybe I should find out how to combine the residual images into an SPM.mat file so I can check it in the "Results" and take eigenvariate just as for other SPM.mat files. But I'm absolutely not sure if this is the correct direction to go and would really like to hear your opinions on how to take eigenvariate from residual images.
