Hi, I'm an amateur archaeologist with a (current) interest in tunnels.
I've had several emails discussions with people who tell me that a 1km long tunnel in 1700 hundred was not unusual. However, the conversation usually dries up as soon as I ask for a name of a mine or a reference.
This is growing increasingly frustrating. I have been assured that there were plenty of mines or adits of 1km length by 1700, however the information I have found on mines up to this period is either missing this type of detail or ... the mines are about 40-150m deep.
So, I would very much appreciate it if someone could provide a reference to back up this claim that there were many mines this length or a specific example which I could quote.
thanks in advance,
Mike
