Title: Looking out to the World, Looking out for the Future

Do you know how the global information economy is being transformed by access to new technologies which both expand and limit who has access to information?

Do you understand the importance of information literacy in the creation of new opportunities to improve quality of life?

Do you believe that access to computers and the internet is key to human and economic development?

Interested in discussing any of those important questions and how they are affecting our profession? Join us for three interactive and engaging round table discussions:
---------------------------------
“In an uncertain world, the future of nations depends not only on their economic capital or natural resources, but on their collective ability to understand and anticipate changes in the environment”. (UNESCO)

Explore the global information environment with the newly-launched IFLA Trend Report, and join the discussion on how the five global trends identified by the Report will impact on the future of libraries and of our profession - with Maria Cotera (CILIP Council; Standing Committee Member, IFLA Management of Library Associations Section).
----------------------------------
“The changing media landscape and the rapid growth in information are affecting individuals and societies now more than ever. In order to succeed in this environment, and to resolve problems effectively in every facet of life, individuals, communities and nations should obtain a critical set of competencies to be able to seek, critically evaluate and create new information and knowledge in different forms using existing tools, and share these through various channels”. (Moscow
Declaration on Media and Information Literacy)

Discover how IFLA is working in collaboration with UNESCO, the "intellectual" agency of the United Nations, on an important initiative on media and information literary – with Almuth Gastinger (Senior Research Librarian at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology; Standing Committee Member, IFLA Information Literacy Section).
---------------------------------
“Worldwide, just one person in six has access to the internet. That means that more than five billion people miss out on chances to pursue education and employment, access government services, learn about valuable health information, conduct business online, and exchange information and ideas”. (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation).

Learn about IFLA’s successful partnership with the Global Libraries Programme of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through the Access to Learning Award (ATLA), which annually gives a $1 million prize to an innovative effort by a public library or similar institution outside of USA to connect people to information and opportunities through free access to computers and the Internet - with Prof. Paul Sturges OBE (Emeritus Professor of Library Studies, Loughborough University; Judging Panel, Access to Learning Award, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation).
----------------------------------
Directions to CILIP: http://www.cilip.org.uk/contact-us/pages/map.aspx

The access codes for the building are E, G, W, X.

ILIG Informals are not lectures; they are informal, but informative, early evening meetings with a short talk on a theme of international interest plus plenty of time for questions and networking. They are open to all and absolutely free.

Light refreshments (nibbles and wine) are served which is why we ask you to let ILIG know you are coming by booking online by no later than Monday 9th September.

Kind Regards

Doug
