I always found Seamus a gentleman who dealt with his fame in a low-key
way. There were no airs or graces about him or any of the usual
delusions writers carry like a candle for their bulging egos. At a
public event such as a Buswell's Hotel book launch he simply slipped in
and out.
On his writing it is many years since I read it in a serious way but
have fond memories of his first Faber and Faber book in Cork City
Library. For many years in my zeal of convert lunacy with Objectivism
and Language poetry I ignored many fine poets. Being older and wiser I
mourn Seamus and may he sleep softly. I also recall Robert Lowell who
passed away after a visit to Seamus in County Wicklow in 1977.
Bye bye Seamus/See you soon
