This is an open invite to join ILIG for our next informal on Wednesday 11th September when Dr Saad Eskander will talk about his experience at the National Library and Archives since the Iraq conflict and how he has sought to develop the role it plays within a divided society.

Dr. Eskander is Director of the National Library and Archives in Iraq and an Honorary Fellow of CILIP. He was appointed Director in 2003 in the wake of the conflict and, since that time has sought to bridge the inherent Sunni-Shia, Arab-Kurdish divisions within the country. Saad will talk about the ethos that he has brought to the library and how has contributed towards building a new Iraq through playing a central role in addressing the historic ethnic and religious divide.
Dr Eskander is a past recipient of New York's Scone Foundation's Archivist of the Year Award and the MESA Academic Freedom Aware. In 2010, he was elected as Iraq's representative at the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for promoting the Return of Cultural Property to the Country of their Origins.
