italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
CALL FOR PAPERS
International conference, University of Bangor, UK
Saturday 18th January 2014
‘Avant-gardes: Strangeness and Stylistic Innovation for the Writer and
Translator’
Organizer: Dr Gillian Ania [log in to unmask]
Guest speakers:
Enrico Palandri (University College London) and Nicoletta Vallorani
(Università di Milano)
AIM: to explore the concept of ‘strangeness’ in narrative texts, the
different ways in which modes of writing are constantly being
extended, and/or the consequences of these for the translator.
FOCUS: English and Italian writing/translation (post-1980s)
Is the Avant-garde writer by definition ‘strange’ or ‘innovative’?
What is the mechanism that suddenly makes a writer, or a wave of
writers, give expression to very different things from those which are
important to the preceding generation? Do new ‘things to say’
necessarily require new ‘ways in which to say them’?
What constitutes ‘strangeness’ in a literary text, and what are the
notional norms against which a text or characteristic is judged
‘strange’? What kinds of ‘strangeness’ exist or are imaginable –
aesthetic, structural, linguistic, thematic – and are they disruptive,
explicable, serendipitous, expendable? What sort of consequences does
the presence (welcome, or otherwise) of ‘strangeness’ have for the
writer, reader or translator, especially in the era of globalization?
Is there ‘excellent beauty’ to be found in what is being written and
translated today?
PRINCIPAL AREAS of interest (though not limited to these)
