Hi

Would it be possible with these digests to click on particular items in the topics list and be sent to the start of that article. I find this news update very useful, but spend quite a lot of time navigating when the agenda is busy.

All the best, Burt

This View of Life: The Role Of Writing And Recordkeeping In The Cultural Evolution Of Human Cooperation Efforts to account for the emergence of large-scale cooperative human societies have focused on a range of cultural advances, from the advent of agriculture to the emergence of new forms of political regulation and social identification. A number of these cultural adaptations have been proposed to overcome the shortcomings of our innate psychological tools but little attention has been accorded to the role of writing and recordkeeping in the evolution of cooperation in large-scale societies, the main focus of the current study.

9,500 files missing from Mumbai municipal records
Mumbai, July 6 (IBNS): The Mumbai municipality has "lost" around 9,500 files of official documents including key city and architectural plans, a Right to Information (RTI) query has revealed. Plans of sensitive city structures like The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Indian Naval Hospital Asvini, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, and some Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buildings are among the "lost" documents.

Subject: Library of Tourism Concern seeking a home

Hi all,
The Library of Tourism Concern is looking for a new home (see below). If anyone can help out with accommodation for this collection, please contact me off-list and I will forward on your details onto Paul Smith, the curator. http://www.tourismconcern.org.uk/index.php/news/315/61/Urgent-Appeal---Help-Save-our-Library.html
All the best,
Stefan
My name is Paul Smith and I have curated the library of Tourism Concern [TC] for some years. TC is an NGO which was founded in 1989 and has campaigned since that date on issues born of the impact of first world tourism on the indigenous host communities of the South or the so-called Third World. TC has been located for some years in premises of London Metropolitan University which are now being vacated. As a result we are looking for a home for our physically small but specialist library. I wonder if you can help us with this. Our holdings can be categorised as follows: Travel Guides (Rough Guides/Footprint Guides), book collection, a few specialist journals, pamphlet box collections of cuttings and 'grey' literature divided thus: subjects and countries. We do possess material which is apparently held in very few other collections - this is not my opinion but that of research users. Travel Guides and Books: 14 metres approx. Pamphlet boxes (subjects) 15 metres very approx. Pamphlet boxes (countries) 19 metres approx. There are additionally some pamphlet boxes covering UK regions and London, a few reference works, and some theses presented by past grateful users of the Library together with statistics published by the World Tourism Organisation. CALL FOR PAPERS
MUSEUMS AND THE MATERIAL WORLD: COLLECTING THE ARABIAN PENINSULA Edited by Pamela Erskine-Loftus

We invite international submissions to be included in this forthcoming
book, being published by MuseumsEtc [www.museumsetc.com] early in 2014.

The continuing rapid expansion of museums in the Arabian Peninsula has
greatly increased the emphasis on collections and collecting in the region.
Collections in the Peninsula range in size and type from natural history,
science and living collections, to heritage and history, fine art, new
media, aviation, and sport. Concurrent with this museum growth is the
increase in semi-public art collections, international temporary
exhibitions and loaned collections, and the expansion of archaeological
excavations.

Purpose
The purpose of this publication is to examine both the collecting (of
material and nonmaterial culture) within the Arabian Peninsula, and the
management of Peninsula collections held outside the region itself. We seek
to establish a dialogue between museums in the Peninsula and those outside
the region who face similar challenges, or whose collections are relevant
to the Peninsula.

Editor
Museums and the Material World will be edited by Pamela Erskine-Loftus, who
has worked in museums for fifteen years, in the United States (including
MoMA, New York), the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. Pamela is the editor
of Reimagining Museums: Practice in the Arabian Peninsula published by
MuseumsEtc. earlier this year, and she established the online crowdsourced
site MAPcollective, for the sharing of resources on museums and museology
in the Peninsula. Pamela holds a doctorate in Arabian Peninsula museology,
and a Masters in Museum Studies with a dissertation on the effects of the
1991 Gulf War on art museums in Kuwait and Iraq, and has written and
presented internationally on aspects of Peninsula museology.

Submissions
Submissions are welcome in one of two formats - essay or précis. Essays of
2,000 - 6,0000 words address and discuss larger aspects of practice;
shorter précis of 1,000 - 2,000 words, should take a more detailed form to
discuss a very specific aspect or example.

This publication will discuss the two distinct areas of collecting and
collections management, moving from the macro to the micro. Specific
aspects of interest include, but are not limited to:

Collecting
* Collection formation with regard to understandings of ownership, use of
international codes/laws, and methods of collection
* Non-collecting museums and their use of loaned collections
* Creation of non-traditional collections; the creation of handling or
teaching collections
* Politics of collecting, its implications on collection types, and aspects
of "collecting ourselves" and "collecting others"
* Merging of existing collections
* Issues related to "difficult collections" (e.g. weaponry, collections
related to war or conflict, "dark heritage", socially objectionable subject
matter)
* Collecting as a component of culture, attitudes towards collecting, and
its place within society
* Collecting of intangible heritage and non-material culture
* The collecting of Peninsula heritage, natural history and art by
international museums (museums outside the Peninsula), and related issues
of ownership, provenance, collection management and collection growth
* Collections as components of the new "destination museums" in the Gulf
* Cities as mass tourism destinations, the advancement of cultural tourism,
and the impacts of tourism growth
* Accessioning and deaccessioning within the contexts of the region and
understandings of ownership, collections held in public trust, and public
domain

Collections Management
* Aspects of management systems and multiple languages
* Fieldwork and collecting
* Open storage
* Audience/visitor access to collection information
* Inventive and appropriate solutions to the issues of object care,
storage, documentation or provenance
* Conversion of paper-based to electronic management systems, and the
implications
* "Customary" collections and the inclusion of locally understood
attributes and meanings within object care and storage
* Partnerships with international institutions
* The loan of objects to international institutions
* The loan of objects from international institutions
* The management, preservation and interpretation of object(s) in situ

Submissions
Museums and the Material World aims to develop a dialogue on current
collections practice between museums in the Peninsula and museums in the
USA, Europe and beyond which are dealing with similar issues. Therefore we
are particularly interested in:
* Collaborative submissions between Peninsula and international museums/
collections, which offer multiple facets of a discussion. Submissions may
take the form of a collaborative contribution, or two/three shorter
separate contributions addressing aspects of the same issue.
* International contributions that offer ideas and insight related to
Peninsula issues.

Museums and the Material World will be published in English, therefore all
contributions must be submitted in English; translation services will not
be provided. The Editor will be happy to assist with collaborator
suggestions and contacts in order to facilitate collaborative submissions.
Inquiries concerning this should be sent to the Editor as soon as possible
and well in advance of the abstract submission deadline.

If you are interested in being considered as a contributor, please send an
abstract (up to 250 words), stating whether you wish to contribute an essay
or précis, and a short biography or résumé to both the editor at
[log in to unmask] and the publishers at [log in to unmask] by 12
August 2013. Enquiries should also be sent to these addresses.

Contributors will receive complimentary print and digital copies of the
publication and a discount on more. The book will be published in both
print and digital formats by MuseumsEtc in early 2014.

Subject: PREMIS Implementation Fair Workshop, 5 September 2013, Lisbon, Portugal

Apologies for cross-posting. Please forward this announcment to any interested parties.

***** PREMIS Implementation Fair Workshop ******

Thursday 5 September 2013, Lisbon, Portugal

As part of iPRES2013, the PREMIS Editorial Committee is holding the latest in a series of Implementation Fair Workshops. It is intended to give implementers of the PREMIS Data Dictionary for Preservation Metadata an opportunity to discuss topics of common interest and find out about the latest developments of the standard and of projects using PREMIS. See:

http://ipres2013.ist.utl.pt/ws2-ipres2013-premis-workshop-proposal.pdf

Draft Agenda

============

Part 1: A View from the Editorial Committee

13:30-13:45 Introduction:

A brief introduction to the workshop.

13:45-14:00: Update on PREMIS activities.

A brief overview of PREMIS activities since the last PREMIS Implementation Fair in Oct. 2012 will be given, including changes to the Data Dictionary as part of the development of PREMIS version 3.0.

14:00-14:45: Changes in the PREMIS Data Model.

The next major version of the PREMIS Data Dictionary will be released by the end of the year 2013; an update on the main evolutions of the PREMIS Data Model and Data Dictionary will be given. Notably, the revised data model will consider Intellectual Entities differently. Additionally, this new version provides a better way to describe Environments separately from Objects and allow software and hardware registries to be linked to. This modeling work, and the new features that it allows, will be described.

14:45-15:05: Changes for Preservation Policy Metadata.

The new version of PREMIS also allows the preservation policy applied to preserved digital objects to be recorded in more detail by updating the preservationLevel semantic container.

15:05-15:35 PREMIS OWL ontology.

A revised version of the OWL ontology is to be published in Spring 2013, and all the PREMIS controlled vocabularies will be published at the same time. The ontology allows users to express PREMIS using RDF, and to work easily with Linked Open Data, at a time when those technologies are being used more and more in registries (e.g. UDFR, PRONOM). Along with the existing PREMIS XML schema, this provides an alternate PREMIS endorsed serialization format, and can be leveraged to address problems of distributed preservation metadata across several preservation repositories or format registries and allow PREMIS metadata to be queried easily.

15:35-16:05 Break

Part 2: A View from the Field

16:05-16:25 Preservation Health Check Report.

The Open Planets Foundation and OCLC Research are conducting a pilot that runs through 2013-2014. The activity involves the National Library of France as a pilot site that provides the preservation metadata from their operational repository and deposit systems. The project consists of a quality analysis of the real-life preservation metadata (METS/PREMIS) used by the pilot site, and intends to demonstrate the value of preservation metadata in mitigating risks by aligning the PREMIS Data Dictionary to risk factors. An update will be givenon the current state of the project with particular emphasis on the initial outcomes.

16:25-18:30 Implementations.

Specific PREMIS implementations will be reviewed and specific issues encountered by implementers will be discussed.

We are looking for contributions from implementers. If you would like to present on a topic or project, please contact us at:

http://www.loc.gov/standards/premis/contact-premis.php

*Who should attend:*

* Digital preservation practitioners: digital librarians and archivists, digital curators, repository managers and those with a responsibility for or an interest in preservation workflows and systems.

* Digital preservation researchers/experts: those who have been involved in research and/or standardization activities on preservation metadata implementation, metadata scheme development and modeling risk assessment frameworks.

* Anyone involved in selecting, designing, or planning a preservation project or repository using preservation metadata.

*Registration*:

To register please go to the iPres 2013 registration page. Attendance will be limited to 50 participants.

Thank you,

Pauline Sinclair

A Remarkable Tale of Manuscript Sleuthing: the Ely Farming Memoranda - Medieval manuscripts blog n a slim box in the manuscripts secure storage at The British Library are three parchment fragments, mounted side-by-side between two pieces of glass in a wooden frame. Two are about the length and width of a ruler, the other is almost the same length but twice as wide. On both sides of the parchment are notes in Old English, some damaged and partially erased, written by several different scribes in a reasonably neat Anglo-Saxon script of the early 11th century. -

Subject: Temporary closure of IET Archives

Dear all,

The IET Archives at Savoy Place, London, is now closed to visitors. This is in preparation for the closure of its current location at Savoy Place on 19 July 2013 for a 2-year refurbishment.

A new archive centre is being built next door to Savoy Place at Savoy Hill House, and this centre is scheduled to open in the autumn of 2013 when visitors will again be welcome. In the intervening period before the opening of its new home the archives will be moved to offsite storage. We will continue to answer enquiries, both postal and e-mail, throughout his period, but our response times are likely to be slower than usual.

The IET Library, also located at Savoy Place, will be temporarily co-located to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers at 1 Birdcage Walk, London, for the entirety of the two-year refurbishment before returning to Savoy Place in 2015. The library reading room is currently closed to visitors, but library services will resume from 1 Birdcage Walk on 22 July 2013.

Changes to the library and archives services have also been posted to the IET library and archive home page at http://www.theiet.org/resources/library/.

Thanks

Anne Locker

We are planning new archive storerooms, and have been looking at motorised shelving systems with integrated lights. We have been told that they have the advantage of smooth operation, improved lighting, and automatic spacing at night to assist the fire suppression system, etc but we're not convinced that these override the cost of installation and maintenance, and the greatly increased complexity of operation. We would like to hear, from those of you who are working with a motorised shelving system, what your experiences are. Does anyone have strong opinions for or against? Many thanks Jane

The BAC is pleased to announce that it is offering 5 bursaries that will cover the cost of the conference fee. Subject: Cardigan Continuum London - Summer Reading Challenge

As the lovely weather kicks in, Cardigan Continuum London have decided that they would like to read something a bit lighter over the summer months, and so, rather than set a text, this time there is an open choice and you can read anything you like so long as it meets the following criteria;

*       it must be fiction,
* it must have some connection with archives or records or archival
themes
* it must in your view be good holiday reading.

Once you have made up your mind what you are going to read, why not let everyone know by adding a comment on the Cardigan Continuum blog
(http://thecardigancontinuum.wordpress.com/) and, for those of you who do not know where to start, the following article by Arlene Schmuland 'The Archival Image in Fiction: An Analysis and Annotated Bibliography <http://archivists.metapress.com/content/v767822474626637/fulltext.pdf> ' (American Archivist 62:1 1999) has a list of 128 to choose from.

Given that everyone will be on holiday reading, there will be no face to face meeting until the autumn, but we will have a Twitter chat on 26 August to discuss what we think of our choices. See you then and have a good summer.
