From Charisma to Curriculum? Communities of Learning in the Eleventh and Twelfth Centuries.
Traditional historical narratives have drawn a sharp contrast between the intellectual worlds of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The distinction is one of modes of learning: to the eleventh century belongs cathedral schools dominated by the influence of charistmatic tutors, and the rich intellectual culture of the wandering scholars; to the twelfth belongs the emergence of the university, the triumph of the dialectical method, and the foundations of high medieval scholasticism. This session aims to provoke discussion about the continuing problem of categorising intellectual thought in Europe in the period 1000-1200. We hope that papers will address the problems of classifying the development (or regression) of thought in this period. What usefulness is there in thinking about periodisation in terms of ‘monastic’ versus ‘scholastic’ cultures, ‘cathedral’ versus ‘school’, or an eleventh- versus a twelfth-century renaissance? We seek contributions that discuss the two centuries either separately or together, emphasising either continuity or difference. Papers may either outline a broad-brush approach to periodisation or focus on a single scholar or text.
