Biodiversity Informatics - Application Development
The last decade has seen a massive development of biodiversity-related information systems, resulting in a diversity to match biodiversity itself. This richness of new resources is counterbalanced by the maddening difficulty in knowing what is where, or of comparing like with like. But quietly, behind the first waves of exuberance, biologists and computer scientists are working together spawning a new field, that of biodiversity informatics (1) - Kew is at the forefront of these advances. The restructure of the IT Department has led to the formal establishment of a high profile Biodiversity Informatics team which has already established itself as a globally recognised leader in the field; with particular emphasis on nomenclature and taxonomy (plant and fungal names) and collections management, the team also support and enable all science and horticulture activities at Kew. The team is tasked with delivering a wide range of exciting projects and these opportunities offer the chance to apply IT knowledge and skills in new and innovative ways to further the field of biodiversity informatics.

Product Management
Kew has recently established a Product Management team and is seeking innovative and enthusiastic candidates for the role of Head of Product Management as well as Product Managers to discover products which are 'valuable, usable and feasible' (2). Kew sees product management as the intersection between business, technology and user experience and are seeking great product managers who are experienced in at least one, passionate about all three, and conversant with practitioners in all. The successful candidates will have a fantastic opportunity to collaboratively create a high profile, commercially successful, innovative product management function for a world leading scientific institution. Botanical or scientific knowledge is not a pre-requisite but an interest in learning about Kew and botanical sciences generally would be a distinct advantage.

Projects
Kew is constantly engaged in the delivery of a wide variety of high profile, collaborative projects with partners from across the globe. We are currently recruiting for two such projects, the Science and Horticulture Systems (SHS) project and the Medicinal Plant Names Services (MPNS) project.
The SHS project is a Government funded project tasked initially with developing a plant/fungal names backbone to underpin scientific endeavor at Kew. The project is using cutting edge open source technologies and is widely regarded as setting the benchmark for nomenclature and taxonomy in an active field of biodiversity informatics research.
The MPNS project is a Wellcome funded project which aims to build a suite of Medicinal Plant Names Services (MPNS). These services will be targeted not at botanists, but at professionals that study, regulate, trade in, or otherwise need to access information about medicinal plants or to communicate about them. The resulting resource will facilitate access to information about plants and plant products relevant to pharmacological research, health regulation, traditional medicine and functional foods, irrespective of which name is used.

IT Operations & Service Management
The IT Operations Team design, implement and support the platforms necessary to underpin the Organisation's scientific systems, both internally and via the Internet. There are also a number of key Back Office systems that are delivered and supported.
This is an exciting time for the Operations Team as the IT infrastructure is currently in the process of being upgraded to further meet and extend the capabilities of all of our systems. With a mixture of open source and off the shelf products as well as cutting edge hardware systems the variety of work and exposure to new technologies make for a fascinating and challenging place to work.
