Healthy Living: Theory, Practice and Change in the Six Non-Naturals (c.1400-1700)
It is well-known that health was thought to depend on the regulation of the six key factors affecting body functions: the air one breathes, sleep, food and drink, evacuations (including hygiene), movement and emotions. In pre-modern medicine careful management of these spheres of life (the so called Non Naturals) was regarded as crucial if one wished to prevent disease. Yet, with the exception of food, the study of medical advice regarding the individual Non Naturals has been neglected, and even less attention has been given to the impact that such advice had on everyday preventive mesures. This conference seeks to address these gaps by inviting scholars working from different disciplinary perspectives (history of ideas, art history and literature) and not exclusively on medical-sources, to reflect upon the role played by the six Non-Naturals both in prescription and in actual practice, in parts of Europe characterised by different cultural traditions and in different periods. This comparative perspective will make possible to explore issues of change in the preventive paradigm (too often presented as static across the centuries) and in its implementation over the period considered, and to highlight the existence of different approaches to prevention in different countries and regions.
