The team
The Discovery Sciences Computational Biology group comprises capabilities in bioinformatics, mathematical modelling and imaging. The team develop and apply innovative in-silico methods to support drug discovery projects in various therapeutic areas and at different stages, with the aim of attaining improved clinical efficacy and safety through improved understanding of human biology.
The role
Bioinformatics Scientists within this group play a key role in exploiting a variety of internal & external knowledge and data sources to solve high priority business questions and support drug projects. Key accountabilitie include:
•Working collaboratively with scientists, use biological networks diagrams to capture project knowledge and address project questions of efficacy and safety.
•Apply computational methods to drug discovery projects
•Extract biological and compound information from external & in-house clinical, experimental, and literature sources, to provide integrated data for the rapid development of mathematical models of physiological processes.
•Evaluate new approaches to viewing, accessing, integrating, and analysing information, including text mining and pathway visualisation/analytics methods
•Produce reports on the development and progress of work, effectively presenting results to key stakeholders.
•The position will involve devising and delivering in-silico methodologies, tools and analyses that progress drug discovery projects across diverse therapeutic areas.
Background and experience
Candidates should ideally:
•Be degree-qualified in biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology or an equivalent biological/medical subject, with an MSc in Bioinformatics, or equivalent experience.
•A number of years postgraduate experience of using bioinformatics or knowledge engineering tools
•Proven industry experience in biotech or the pharmaceutical industry
•Expertise in application of pathway/biological network analysis and visualisation to drug discovery or biomedical research
•Proficiency in programming/scripting (e.g. UNIX, Perl, Java, JavaScript, Excel VBA, Pipeline Pilot, R scripting), with skills in high-content data handling, manipulation and analysis desirable.
