Hi all,
I too would like to offer a paper for this proposed session - 'New Perspectives on Cock-fighting in Roman Britain'
This paper will look at the issues surrounding the identification of cockerels that have not developed spurs, along with using the development of the spur to estimate the age of archaeological specimens. It will discuss the apparent old age of many cockerels recovered from Roman Towns, challenging the common interpretation that cockerels were 'unwanted' animals slaughtered primarily for their meat, offering the suggestion that they were kept for cock-fighting, which is likely to have established a deep bond between human and animal.
Cheers, Sean
