Chem-histers might be interested in this brief biography I have produced
for internal use.
Frank Greenway, Keeper of Chemistry at the Science Museum between 1967
and 1980, passed away at the age of 95 on Sunday 16th June. Born in
Cardiff in 1917, he studied chemistry at Jesus College, Oxford, before
serving in the Second World War as a bomb disposal officer. He then
taught in Bournemouth and Epsom Grammar School before working at Kodak
in Harrow. Greenaway joined the Science Museum as an Assistant Keeper in
1949 and became a Deputy Keeper ten years later. His major achievement
at the museum was the development of new Chemistry Galleries in 1964 and
their refurbishment in 1977. He was also one of the first curators at
the museum who could be described as a professional historian of
science. He was awarded a PhD in the history of science from UCL and
became Reader of the History of Science at the Royal Institution between
1970 and 1985. His own research was on John Dalton and the atomic theory
which was published as John Dalton and the Atom (1966). Robert Bud
remarks that "He was the most distinguished scholar at the Science
Museum for many years keeping alive the flame of research
singlehandedly". After his retirement, he continued to work in the
Science Museum Library as a Research Fellow until 1991, which resulted
in a major publication, Science International: the history of the
International Council of Scientific Unions (1996). On his 90th birthday
in 2007, he published his autobiography Chymia Acta.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Harriet Croft, Frank Greenaway's daughter, e-mailed me and others
earlier this evening with the melancholy news that Frank died on Sunday
16 June.
She asked us to let those who were close to Frank know of this, and
inform them that the funeral will take place at Reading Crematorium, All
Hallows Road (off Reading Road) on Friday 28 June at 12.15pm, and
afterwards at The Crowne Plaza Hotel, Reading.
Harriet has asked that those who intend to be present to let her know.
Her details are: 7 The Orchards, Landkey, Barnstable EX32 0QP; 01271
831210; [log in to unmask]
It is more than likely that I have omitted some who were close
colleagues of Frank and who would like to know of these arrangements, in
which case please pass on this message.
Best wishes,
Robert Anderson
