medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Meg:
As editor, I would not regard Basilius / Blasius as a spelling variant but as a
real variant, and thus it should be mentioned in the critical apparatus if the
text is "normalized" ("corrected" or simply "changed" might be a better term
here). Of course many search engines ignore critical notes, but that is another
matter.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings all,
Ím finishing up a short study of the cult of St. Blaise in Iceland, and have
two queries. Íve just run across the possibility that in Latin his name might
be spelled 'Basilius' instead of 'Blasius'. How would I find out (since most
modern work is going to normalize!) when and where the ́Basilius' spelling
might be found? (I think I have one example, which I had thought was St.
Basil!)
Question two I think Íve asked before, but there may be different people on
the list now. I understand that the standard iconography is crossed candles,
but Ím wondering if he is ever depicted with animals, especially sheep, so
that a statue of him could be confused (by a protestant) with one of John the
Baptist.
Thanks,
Meg
