ALISS Visit to Royal Asiatic Society Library 3rd July 2pm
ALISS (Association of Librarians and Information professionals in the Social Sciences). are pleased to announce an opportunity to visit the Royal Asiatic Society Library
The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland (RAS) was established, according to its Royal Charter<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Charter> of 11 August 1824, to further "the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia."
The geographical scope of the collections is all of Asia including the Middle East and also some material on Islamic North Africa The focus of the collection is historical rather than contemporary and there are significant collections of manuscripts, paintings, prints and drawings, and some personal papers, photographs, maps and coins. The library also holds a collection of around 400 periodicals of which around 100 are current. Major collections include the Tod collection of Indian manuscripts and paintings, the Hodgson collection of Buddhist Sanskrit manuscripts, the Ram Raz collection of Indian architectural drawings, the Raffles and Maxwell collections of Malay manuscripts and the Howell collection of early photographs of China and Japan.

The visit will last approximately 1.5 hours
