Abstract
The ever-increasing demand for travel raises various problems and issues including congestion, energy, environmental impact, safety and security. Continuous construction of new roads will not be a sustainable solution due to the increasingly tight fiscal, physical and environmental constraints. This talk presents a quick quantitative tool for assessment and optimisation of transport infrastructure. We present a macroscopic approach which is easy to assemble, calibrate, and automate. Various performance indicators, which are derivable from standard sensing technology, will be discussed. The core of the modelling tool is built based on a Cell Transmission Model and the optimiser is formulated as a linear programming problem. The software package, compared with its microscopic counterparts, requires little computational effort and is able to derive performance estimates and optimal control strategies with short computational time. The package also allows users to test different control plans including ramp metering, variable speed limit, and adaptive signal control. Case studies conducted in London and England will be presented.
About the Speaker
Andy Chow is a Lecturer in Transport Studies at UCL. His research lies in developing tools for analysing and managing transport systems. His doctoral dissertation on optimal control of dynamic transport networks completed at UCL received a Gordon Newell Memorial Dissertation Prize in 2008. In 2007-10, Andy worked as a postdoctoral researcher at University of California at Berkeley in the United States where he participated in a number of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) projects. Since joining UCL in 2010, Andy has been associated with the Centre for Transport Studies and SpaceTime Lab on various research on system performance analysis, space-time data mining, and optimal control.
Next CTS Seminar
Ms Roselle Thoreau (Centre for Transport Studies, UCL) will be leading a seminar titled “The long term impact of mobility scooters” at UCL on Wednesday 19th June @ 16:00
About the CTS Seminar Series
The CTS seminar series aims to facilitate discussion on current research topics in the transport field. Seminars are held jointly with our colleagues in the Centre for Transport Studies at University College London. They are usually held on Wednesday afternoons at Imperial College London or University College London.
Seminars are free of charge and open to all interested parties. Booking is not required.
