Subject: Enquiry about Kipling's godchildren
Hi
I'm researching a First World War group photograph (for further details see attached outline and www.groupphoto.co.uk). I have just heard from the family of one of the men pictured that he or one of his brothers was the godson of Rudyard Kipling and I wonder if you know of any way that I could find out more about this. The man in question was Leslie Herman Berlein (his brothers being Charles Maurice Berlein & Walter Martin Berlein). Just like Kipling's son Jack, Leslie Berlein was killed at Loos on 25th September 1915, and his father Julius Berlein (who was apparently a friend of Kipling's) made a pilgrimage to the battlefields and the graves of two of his sons. Any help you can give me will be gratefully received.

Sincerely
Andrew Tatham

G> Dear All,
G>
G> I think this should be addressed to John R but please forgive my ignorance?
G>
G> I found the Rudyard Kipling (Jiscmail) address and have follow your
G> communications with interest. The original reason was that my son in law
G> mentioned that one of his great grandfathers was a friend of Rudyard Kipling
G> during his times in South Africa? I have tried to investigate the
G> connections from here but very regrettably, all has come to nothing. The
G> connections would be either John Spranger Harrison (on his mother's side) or
G> Walter Berlein on his father's side? Walter Berlein was of Prussian origin
G> but lived in England.
G>
G> Both were around in the late 1800's and John Spranger is apparently buried
G> near the 10th green of the West Driefontein mine's golf course. I would
G> certainly appreciate any light that could be shed on any possible
G> connection, if there is any record of it?
G>
G> At the same time, I have been operating photographic safaris into Southern
G> Africa for the last 35 years. From my early life my parents brought me up on
G> Kipling writings, even as bed time stories. It struck me that there may be
G> interest from your associates in me investigating and planning a safari
G> including the "banks of the great, grey, green", historic spots, Rhodes
G> route north, etc. to best suit your wishes. It would be a pleasure to assist
G> and I would obviously base plans for such a trip on the interest and
G> feedback I get from you all, or a spokesperson you may appoint. It is
G> important that such a trip suits your needs rather than being "just another
G> trip" to South Africa.
G>
G> I look forward to hearing from you and apologise again for my forwardness.
G>
G> My best wishes,
G>
G> Garth
