===================================
Dear colleagues,
The new edition of HITRAN (HITRAN2012) has passed testing and is now
available.
This message gives you the instructions for accessing the HITRAN
database compilation. The current edition is HITRAN2012, and it is
available on an anonymous ftp-site. It can also be accessed via the
web.
Use of the HITRAN database is free. We ask users to please cite the
article describing the database when publishing or presenting results
based on HITRAN. This is a good idea in order to indicate to your
readers which database, that is which edition, you have employed. The
article describing the 2012 edition of HITRAN will appear in a Special
Issue of the Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative
Transfer that is expected to come out this year. We also request that
users cite the original or primary sources for the parameters. These
references are indicated in the transitions and also for the
cross-section data.
You have 3 different choices for accessing the HITRAN ftp-site:
1. ---------------
FTP--> cfa-ftp.harvard.edu
User--> anonymous
Password--> your e-mail address
Then change directories--> cd pub/HITRAN2012
2. --------------------
One can also access the data using a web browser. Just type
"ftp://cfa-ftp.harvard.edu/pub/HITRAN2012/" for the location.
(You may have to configure your browser to send your e-mail
address as anonymous ftp password.)
3. ----------------------
Alternatively, if you have difficulty using ftp, you can access the
site via http by going to the url:
http://www.cfa.Harvard.edu/HITRAN/HITRAN2012/
You will then be prompted for:
username --> HITRAN
password --> getdata
(note that some items are case sensitive, such as "HITRAN" and
"getdata")
Many of the HITRAN data files are given both in their full ASCII and
also compressed in zip format.
Documentation placed in the ftp-site is in the portable document
format (pdf).
==> Note that we are still making ongoing improvements to many
molecular bands. Updates, improvements, and corrections to the
edition are posted in the "HITRAN UPDATES" sub-page of the HITRAN
web-site. For example, the line-mixing algorithm for the carbon
dioxide transitions is being validated and will soon be posted.
Please e-mail to me a summary of any serious problems you
encounter (or successes or suggestions). Be aware that there is a
slight problem with the software program JavaHAWKS... it has not yet
been updated to account for the new molecules or isotopologues added
to HITRAN since the previous edition. An alternative for filtering or
manipulating HITRAN is provided by the internet program "HITRAN on the
Web" at http://hitran.iao.ru
We are working on an SQL (Structured Query Language) version of the
database. This new relational database structure will hopefully be
released within the year. It will provide many advantages over the
current underlying ASCII form of HITRAN, but will allow for various
output options convenient for the user.
Sincerely,
Laurence Rothman and Iouli Gordon
