medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings all,
I'm trying to find out about teachings on unbaptized infants in the 11th-14th centuries.
I have an idea that St. Augustine taught that they would be damned, but am not sure of this, and anyway the concept of a special location for them, the limbo puerorum, did develop - but when and where, and how well-known was it?
Any help could be appreciated.
Meg
PS My context is rules against burial of unbaptized infants in graveyards. In Iceland this rule is ameliorated somewhat in the 13th c, presumably reflecting a change in theology, but I'd like to know what.
