Hi John
We are in the same position as Tom. We've implemented RDA for copy cataloguing and vendor supplied records (where an RDA record is available) are moving towards full implementation in 2014. We're not displaying 336, 337 or 338 in our OPAC, and Summon uses existing MARC fields to designate material types. I'm also very interested to hear if anyone else is currently making use of them or already has any longer-term plans in place to do so.
Thanks
Helen

This has been discussed earlier this month, but I see that part of UEA's answer was sent to individuals not the list, so at the risk of repetition:
- we display the 33x fields in our normal OPAC, because this is very easy to do; but we do not display them in our 'resource discovery' FE (Primo), because this is a) difficult to do and b) pointless because no-one ever looks at full display in Primo
- similar to what Tom says: both our OPAC and Primo assign format icons/statements based on other parts of the MARC record (LDR and 008 codes or the internal Aleph 'FMT' field); but the GMD has value in display in OPAC, and staff searching on Aleph includes indexing of the GMD
- we do not index the 33x fields anywhere; until the data is applied consistently across all records, any such indexing would be worthless
- our cataloguers are continuing to add GMDs to records for all non-book materials for the foreseeable future
HTH. Best wishes,
Alan
