Basic Critical Appraisal Skills Workshop

This one-day workshop gives an intensive overview of the skills needed and resources available for critical appraisal, and will provide ideas on how these can be used on return to the workplace.
Who is it for?
• Clinicians needing to critically evaluate healthcare information for use in clinical practice
• Health librarians producing systematic reviews, guidelines or health technology assessments
• Healthcare professionals producing current awareness bulletins and teaching critical appraisal skills.
What is covered?
• What is critical appraisal, and why is it important
• Detailed appraisal of a primary research study and a systematic review (group exercises)
• Review of online resources supporting critical appraisal
• Teaching appraisal in small groups.
We will assume you:
• know of evidence-based healthcare and are aware of the main resources.
Course objectives:
At the end of the workshop you will:
• Understand the importance and characteristics of critical appraisal.
• Be aware of a range of tools for assisting in critical appraisal in healthcare.
• Be aware of a range of products based upon critical appraisal in healthcare.
• Understand the basic steps involved in appraising a randomized controlled trial and have worked through an example as a group.
• Understand the basic steps involved in appraising a systematic review and have worked through an example as a group exercise.
• Have been given some basic tips for teaching critical appraisal in small groups.
