Social searching: Karen Blakeman
Venue: Bristol (details of the venue to be confirmed)
Date: Tuesday, 16 July, 2013 - 09:30 - 16:30
Course Outline:
"Social" has become an integral part of search. Companies use social and
professional networks to market their services and stay in touch with
existing and potential customers. Conference presentations, highlights
and videos are shared across multiple platforms. Researchers use social
media to discuss and promote their work. And many people now use their
social connections to share and ask questions. Google and Bing include
social media in their results, and use your network connections to
personalise your searches and those of your friends. However, they do
not cover everything. Conversations start up in many different places,
so knowing where to look is vital. This workshop will look at the impact
of social networks on search and the specialist tools that are
available.
Topics covered will include:
Why "social" is an important part of search
How organisations and individuals are using social and professional
networks to publish and share information
The impact of sharing, "likes" and g+1 on search results
The networks you need to consider
How Google and Bing incorporate social media and connections in
search results - can you stop them?
Specialist tools for social search
Confidentiality and ethical issues
Quality issues
You will have ample opportunity to experiment and try out the techniques
for yourself and Karen will be on hand to help and advise you. Exercises
are provided but you are free to explore and try out searches of your
own.
Who should attend:
This workshop is for anyone wishing to improve their search skills and
understand the importance of social searching. It is suitable for all
levels of experience and covers all subject areas.
