Under the current approach at Penn State, a primary care doctor is
scheduled to attend every practice and game and an orthopedic doctor is
scheduled to attend at least one practice every week and every game.
Sebastianelli had provided a full-time orthopedic presence at every
practice.
.
At Michigan State, Kovan said, a primary care doctor and orthopedic doctor
are scheduled to attend every game but don't normally attend every
practice unless scrimmaging is involved, like during two-a-days or spring
practice. The head athletic trainer and associate head athletic trainer
are at every practice.
.
We don't typically attend practices much, only because our own clinical
practice doesn't let us, Kovan said.
.
Our physicians, we don't come to practice, but we'll come usually at the
end of practice. Now occasionally maybe one of our surgeons gets out of
the operating room early and they'll come over an hour early because
they're there and they can. But most of the time we show up after
practice, and then what we do is we're there for an hour, give or take,
based on kids getting a shower, kids having media obligations, before we
can see them and get them all taken care of.
.
In addition, a primary care doctor holds training room hours Monday
through Friday from 8 a.m. until noon to deal with routine health issues
along with injuries.
.
Ours is very much a primary care sports med model, Kovan said. Our office
practice is essentially about seven or eight physicians and a couple of
physician assistants. They're all part of the university; we're all
employed by the university. We actually take care of the community, but
part of our job description and contract we have is also with athletics.
