Very interesting Donna,
I noted that the age of these people experiencing high levels of ill health is less than 60 which is less than the normal retirement date in the UK. So a lot of people 'retired' under 60 may very well be for ill-health reasons or at least the depression, rumination and sedentary lifestyle that comes with too early a retirement from an active life may have increased the risk of mental and physical ailments. It would be good to see this research done in the older age group (especially as I creep passed 56 with no hope of retirement in sight)
The evidence that work is good for you is also caveated by the evidence that no work is better for your health than poor work

Hi Donna
A study hit the news recently indicating that retirement can have a detrimental affect on health ( backing up Sue's coment on going part time)

"They note that these significant predictive effects were still present after taking into account the health of individuals before retirement. They say this implies that there was a clear direction of influence in which employment status was causing the differences in health, rather than the other way around."
NHS choices have specific Health promotion areas for the over 60's that might give you some ideas for content.
