RESEARCH SEMINAR II - Audiences, Visitors, Users

We are pleased to invite you to the second RESEARCH SEMINAR, part of the AHRC funded project 'New Media, Audiences and Affective Experiences' at City University London. The seminar will explore questions on researching experiences and motivations of audience, visitors and users. The presentations will provide insights on audience and visitors research methods in cultural and museum settings as well as through artistic interventions in the city. The use of mobile applications and GPS technologies within that framework will be a focus on the discussion. Please note that the next seminar will take place in June (19/20th) exploring "Theoretical approaches on digital and new media research'
Seminar Speakers:
Theano Moussouri is a lecturer in Museum Studies at the Institute of Archaeology. After completing her BA in Preschool Education at the University of Athens, she pursued postgraduate studies at the Museum Studies Department, University of Leicester where she completed her PhD thesis on Family Agendas and Family Learning in Hands-On Museums. She worked for the Visitor Studies Unit of the Science Museum in London, UK on a number of large scale exhibition projects including the Wellcome Wing. Between 1999 and 2004 she was Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Museums and Gallery Education at the Museum Studies Department, University of Leicester where she was involved in developing the Generic Learning Outcomes Framework. In 2004 she founded Audience Focus with the mission to help museums and heritage organisation to facilitate enriching learning experiences for their visitors. She is currently on the Editorial Board of Visitor Studies and the new Books Editor for Curator.
Helen Bendon is a UK-based artist working predominantly in video and photography. Herwork was selected for New Contemporaries in 1998 and since then she has been exhibiting internationally (inc. Yvon Lambert, Paris, Kari Kenetti, Helsinki and the Centre for Photographie in Geneva). Her films and video works have also been shown at international festivals and screening events including the Commonwealth Film Festival, the Lux and the international Film Festival 700IS, Iceland, in which her film The Pack was shortlisted for the ‘Alcoa’ prize.In 2001 she won the coveted Fondation CCF pour la Photographie prize and her work is held in collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the Arts Council of England and the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, France. In 2005 Helen was awarded The Conversation Gap Award commissioned by Career Innovation (Ci), working on narrative-based projects with some of the world’s leading businesses.

The project is part of the AHRC Collaborative Skills Development Scheme organised by Department of Creative Industries and Enterprise, City University London in partnership with Department of Creative Industries and Practice, King’s College London, Art and Design Research Institute, New London Graduate School (NLGS), Middlesex University, Department of Digital Humanities, University College London. It aims to establish a platform for creative dialogue and collaboration for doctoral students. The project will provide space for discussing research methods in relation to new digital technologies, audience engagement and cultural experiences. This space of exchange will be created through working together across three themed workshops leading to a one-day symposium with doctoral students from partner institutions.
Pivotal questions that will be posed are: How can a researcher capture the effect of audience experience in an interactive environment? What are the research methods and tools used to apprehend and measure users' involvement? How might such affective dynamics be theorised? This space of exchange will be created through working together across three themed workshops leading to a one-day symposium with doctoral students from partner institutions. The seminars will discuss three main themes: (1) Research and digital technologies (2) Users and audience (3) Theoretical approaches on digital and new media research.
A symposium, part of the project, will be held on 9th of December 2013 at Parasol Unit foundation of contemporary art.
The symposium will be facilitated also as part of the Haegue Yang exhibition. The symposium will specifically discuss audience experiences and interaction with new media interventions in art galleries, museums and institutions invoking affect. Potential panel themes include, institutional engagement in the production of interactive experiences and politics of emotions and affect in media art, the artist perspective.
